This creamy Orange Fluff Salad is a classic family-style dessert made with sweet mandarin oranges and a light, fluffy orange-vanilla cream. It takes only about 10 minutes to put together and is perfect for holidays, potlucks, parties, or an easy make-ahead dessert.
Ingredients
- 1 package (3.4 oz / 96 g) instant vanilla pudding mix
- 1 package (3 oz / 85 g) orange gelatin powder
- 1 cup boiling water
- ½ cup cold water
- 1 container (8 oz / 225 g) whipped topping, thawed
- 1 can (20 oz / 567 g) crushed pineapple, very well drained
- 2 cans (11 oz each) mandarin oranges, well drained
- 2 cups mini marshmallows
- ½ cup sweetened shredded coconut, optional
- ½ cup cottage cheese, optional for a more traditional fluff texture
Instructions
- Place the orange gelatin powder in a large mixing bowl. Pour in 1 cup boiling water and whisk for about 1–2 minutes, until the gelatin has completely dissolved.
- Stir in ½ cup cold water. Allow the mixture to cool for about 10–15 minutes. It should be cool but should not begin to set.
- Add the instant vanilla pudding mix to the cooled orange gelatin. Whisk until completely smooth and slightly thickened.
- Place the mixture in the refrigerator for about 15–20 minutes, just until it starts to thicken. Do not let it become completely firm.
- Remove it from the refrigerator and gently fold in the thawed whipped topping. Continue folding until the mixture becomes smooth, fluffy, and pale orange.
- Drain the crushed pineapple extremely well. Press out excess juice with the back of a spoon so the dessert does not become watery.
- Drain the mandarin oranges. Set aside a few pieces for garnish if desired.
- Fold the crushed pineapple, mandarin oranges, and mini marshmallows into the creamy orange mixture.
- If using coconut or cottage cheese, gently fold them in at this stage.
- Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 1–2 hours. The chilling time allows the mixture to become thicker and gives all the flavors time to blend.
- Before serving, gently stir once. Spoon into a large serving bowl and garnish with extra mandarin oranges if desired.
Tips
Drain the fruit very thoroughly. Excess pineapple or mandarin juice can make the fluff thin and watery.
Use instant pudding mix, not cook-and-serve pudding.
Fold the whipped topping in gently rather than beating it vigorously. This keeps the dessert light and fluffy.
For the thick, creamy consistency shown in the photo, chill the finished dessert for at least 2 hours before serving.
You can leave out the coconut or cottage cheese if you prefer an extra-smooth and creamy version.
Optional Creamsicle Version
For an even creamier orange-creamsicle flavor, add:
- 4 oz softened cream cheese
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Beat the cream cheese until smooth before folding it into the whipped topping mixture. This creates a richer dessert with a cheesecake-like creaminess.
Storage
Keep Orange Fluff covered tightly in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Give it a gentle stir before serving because a small amount of liquid from the fruit can settle at the bottom.
Freezing is not recommended because the whipped topping and fruit can change texture after thawing.
