¼ tsp cayenne pepper, or to taste

1 small tomato, diced

Juice of 1 lime
Pinch of salt
For the Tacos
8 small corn or flour tortillas
1 cup finely shredded red or green cabbage
1 avocado, sliced
¼ cup crumbled cotija or feta cheese
Fresh cilantro, for garnish
Lime wedges, for serving
Optional Creamy Lime Sauce
½ cup plain Greek yogurt or sour cream
1 tbsp fresh lime juice
1 tbsp mayonnaise
½ small garlic clove, finely grated
Pinch of salt
¼ tsp chili powder
Instructions
1. Make the Mango Salsa
Add the diced mango, red onion, tomato, jalapeno, and cilantro to a bowl.
Add lime juice and a pinch of salt.
Gently stir everything together and set aside while you prepare the shrimp.
Tip: Letting the salsa sit for 10 minutes gives the flavors time to mingle.
2. Season the Shrimp
Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels.
Place them in a bowl and toss with olive oil, chili powder, smoked paprika, cumin, garlic powder, cayenne, salt, black pepper, and lime juice.
Make sure each shrimp is evenly coated.
3. Cook the Shrimp
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the shrimp in a single layer.
Cook for about 2–3 minutes per side, depending on their size, until they’re pink, opaque, and cooked through.
Don’t overcook them—the shrimp should be juicy and tender.
Remove from the heat immediately.
4. Make the Creamy Lime Sauce
Whisk together Greek yogurt, lime juice, mayonnaise, garlic, salt, and chili powder.
Taste and add more lime or chili if desired.
5. Warm the Tortillas
Warm tortillas in a dry skillet for about 20–30 seconds per side.
Alternatively, wrap them in a damp paper towel and microwave briefly until warm and flexible.
6. Build the Tacos
Layer each tortilla with:
Shredded cabbage
Spicy shrimp
Mango salsa
Avocado slices
Crumbled cotija or feta
Creamy lime sauce
Fresh cilantro
Finish with a generous squeeze of fresh lime.
Serve immediately.
Notes
Fresh or frozen shrimp both work well. If using frozen shrimp, thaw completely and pat dry before seasoning.
Corn tortillas give these tacos a more traditional flavor, while flour tortillas are softer and easier to fold.
Adjust the cayenne and jalapeño according to your preferred spice level.
Mango should be ripe but still slightly firm so it doesn’t turn mushy in the salsa.
Don’t marinate shrimp in lime juice for too long before cooking, as the acid can alter their texture.
Tips for the Best Shrimp Tacos
Pat the shrimp dry
This is one of the easiest ways to get beautifully browned shrimp instead of watery, steamed shrimp.
Don’t overcrowd the pan
Cook in batches if necessary. Shrimp need enough space to sear properly.
Don’t overcook
Shrimp cook very quickly. As soon as they’re opaque and curled into a loose C shape, they’re generally ready.
Balance the flavors
The best tacos have a combination of spicy, sweet, creamy, salty, crunchy, and acidic elements. Don’t skip the lime!
Keep the salsa chunky
Cut the mango and vegetables into small but distinct pieces rather than mashing everything together.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make these tacos less spicy?
Absolutely. Leave out the cayenne and reduce or omit the jalapeño. The smoked paprika and cumin will still give the shrimp plenty of flavor.
Can I make them extra spicy?
Yes! Add extra cayenne, chopped serrano peppers, chipotle powder, or your favorite hot sauce.
Can I use frozen mango?
Fresh mango is best, but thawed frozen mango can work. Drain it well and gently pat it dry before dicing.
Can I use another protein?
Definitely. Try:
Grilled chicken
Blackened fish
Salmon
Crispy tofu
Black beans
Can I prepare these ahead of time?
You can prepare the salsa, sauce, cabbage, and seasoning ahead of time. Cook the shrimp shortly before serving for the best texture.
How long does the mango salsa last?
Store it covered in the refrigerator and use it within 1–2 days for the best flavor and texture.
Can I make these gluten-free?
Yes. Use certified gluten-free corn tortillas and check the labels on your seasonings and other packaged ingredients.
What can I serve with shrimp tacos?
Great sides include:
Cilantro-lime rice
Black beans
Mexican street corn
Avocado salad
Tortilla chips and salsa
Fresh guacamole
