Ingredients
For the Taco Salad
1 lb (450 g) ground beef
1 packet taco seasoning, about 1 oz
1/3 cup water
1 large head romaine lettuce, chopped
2 cups Nacho Cheese Doritos, lightly crushed
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved or diced
1 cup black beans, drained and rinsed
1 cup corn, drained
1/2 small red onion, finely diced
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
For the Creamy Taco Dressing
1/2 cup sour cream
1/3 cup mayonnaise
2 tbsp salsa
1 tbsp lime juice
1/2 tsp chili powder
1/4 tsp garlic powder
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Optional Toppings
Sliced avocado
Lime wedges
Extra salsa
Sour cream
Jalapeño slices
Extra Doritos
Instructions
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook for about 6–8 minutes, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
Continue cooking until the beef is completely browned and no pink remains. Drain off any excess grease.
Add the taco seasoning and water to the beef. Stir well so the seasoning evenly coats the meat.
Reduce the heat slightly and simmer for about 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid has evaporated and the beef is richly seasoned.
Remove the skillet from the heat and allow the taco beef to cool for about 5–10 minutes. Avoid adding piping-hot beef directly to the lettuce because it can make the salad wilt.
While the beef cools, prepare the dressing. In a small bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, salsa, lime juice, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
Whisk until the dressing becomes smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Add another teaspoon of lime juice if you prefer a brighter flavor.
Wash and thoroughly dry the romaine lettuce. Chop it into bite-size pieces and place it in a large serving bowl.
Add the black beans, corn, tomatoes, red onion, cilantro, and shredded cheddar cheese.
Add the cooled seasoned ground beef over the vegetables.
Lightly break the Doritos into large bite-size pieces. Do not crush them too finely because larger pieces give the salad its signature crunch.
Add the Doritos immediately before serving.
Drizzle part of the creamy taco dressing over the salad.
Using a large salad serving spoon or salad servers, gently toss everything together until the lettuce, beef, vegetables, cheese, chips, and dressing are evenly distributed.
Drizzle additional dressing over the top and garnish with extra cheese, cilantro, tomatoes, and a few whole Doritos for a colorful presentation.
Serve immediately with avocado, lime wedges, salsa, or sour cream on the side.
Tips

For the best Doritos Taco Salad, always add the chips at the very end. If they sit in the dressing for too long, they will lose their crunch.

Let the taco meat cool slightly before assembling the salad. Warm beef is delicious, but extremely hot beef can quickly wilt fresh lettuce.

Make sure your lettuce is completely dry after washing. Excess water can dilute the dressing and make the salad watery.

You can prepare the beef, vegetables, and dressing several hours ahead, but store everything separately until serving time.

For an extra cheesy salad, add a combination of cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese.

If you enjoy spicy food, use spicy Nacho Doritos, add diced jalapeños, or mix a little hot sauce into the dressing.

For parties, place all the ingredients in separate bowls and create a Doritos Taco Salad bar so everyone can build their own serving.

Storage

This salad is best eaten immediately after adding the Doritos and dressing.

If you expect leftovers, do not mix all the ingredients together at once. Store the chopped lettuce, cooked beef, vegetables, cheese, dressing, and Doritos in separate airtight containers.

The cooked taco beef will keep in the refrigerator for about 3–4 days.

The prepared dressing can be refrigerated for about 3–4 days.

Chopped vegetables are generally best within 2–3 days.

Keep the Doritos sealed at room temperature and add them only when you are ready to eat.

Romaine lettuce adds freshness and provides vitamins A and K.

Black beans contribute plant-based protein and fiber, helping make the salad more filling.

Tomatoes provide vitamin C and beneficial antioxidants such as lycopene.

Corn adds carbohydrates, fiber, and natural sweetness.

Avocado, when used as a topping, contributes healthy unsaturated fats and potassium.

The combination of protein, beans, vegetables, and lettuce makes this salad more substantial than a basic green salad, while the Doritos add the fun, crunchy element that makes it especially satisfying.
